School uniform problem

Here in rural India, I often hear stories about children who don’t go to school because their parents cannot afford to buy a school uniform. From time to time, either the Government or charity organisations distribute thousands of school uniforms to needy families.

I read similar stories from Nigeria, Ghana, and Sri Lanka.

Wouldn’t it be easier and more economical for the countries, where a non-negligible part of population is poor, just to abolish school uniform requirement like they recently did it in Turkey? The result would be obvious: more children in schools, higher literacy rate, less governmental spending on free uniforms.
