Pictures of Badulla

Badulla is a lovely town in the middle of picturesque mountains of central Sri Lanka. The climate here is perfect — neither too hot not too cold.

Buddhist temple. It is called Muthiyanganaya.

Restaurant "Paradise". It's between the church and the hospital. I think that "Paradise" is a relevant name for a restaurant that is between a church and a hospital 🙂

Clock tower. Every town in Sri Lanka has one or more such clock towers. There are several of them in Badulla.

This mountain reminds me the TV mountain in Kabul. My eyes almost become filled with tears every time I see it.

A lorry. They are much less colourful here than in Pakistan.

I don't know what this thing is doing here under the bridge. It stays here all the time. It's a bull cart. Maybe it is waiting for its bull. If you are a bull and reading this, please come, it is still missing you.

Road sign

Mahiyangana road. Dear tourists, there are many hotels along this road but Lonely Planet is silent about it.

Lower street. One of the shopping streets.

Bazaar street. Another shopping street.

A photo studio on the Mahiyangana road.

***

The old public library. There are two public libraries in town -- the old one and the new one. It is easier to get Sri Lankan citizenship and a passport than a membership card in any of these libraries.

***

Prison. In Sri Lanka, prisons are usually located in the centre of the town. On every prison it is written "Prisoners are human beings too."

***

This is the street adjacent to the prison. Street names in Sri Lanka are written in three languages: Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

***

British names are exploited and even over-exploited in this country. A muddy building in a remote village can claim to be a branch of the University of Oxford. Or Cambridge. And why not if those things sell so well. If a company tries to sound British it is probably not a good company -- instead of making good quality products they try to sell shit by just making it look more British.

***

Another masterpiece of inferiority.

***

Food city -- a supermarket. Even coffee is sold here, which means I can survive in this Island. Those in India who miss good coffee, come to Sri Lanka.

Some Dutch legacy

Vegetable market near the train station. A perfect place to learn Sinhala as no one of these vendors speaks English.
