An SMS from the President

Today I, like everyone else in the Island, got an SMS from the President of the country. It was in three languages: Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Oba samata suba aluth avuruddak wewa! Ungal ellorukkum iniya puththandu vaalthukal! Wish you all a happy new year!
President Mahinda Rajapaksa

In your country, do you get New Year wishes from your President via an SMS? 🙂

“Happy New Year” in Sinhala will be: Suba aluth avuruddak wewa!

Aluth means new. You can reply: Esema wewa (same to you).

In Tamil, Happy New Year — Iniya puthaandu nalvaazhthukkal!

In Sinhala they also wish “Aaubohowewa” — may your life be longer.
